OSDP now available in LR-6 RFID Readers
Enhance your facility's security with TagMaster's latest firmware update, now enabling OSDP protocol integration for 2.45GHz readers without additional hardware.
Ensuring a secure facility is the top priority in the field of access control. Therefore, our latest firmware update for our 2.45GHz readers, enables the possibility to use the OSDP protocol without adding any new hardware. This have been available and used in our UHF readers for many years, and with today’s focus on security, we see an increasing demand for this to be available in all our products.
The introduction of the OSDP (Open Supervised Device Protocol) allows security managers to enhance site security further. With the OSDP upgrade in TagMaster's reader portfolio for automatic vehicle identification, organizations can now improve vehicle gate access in a trusted and secure manner. As OSDP becomes the standard for organizations demanding the highest security levels, it's important to understand what OSDP is, its benefits, and its implications for vehicle access control.
What is OSDP?
OSDP was developed by the Security Industry Association to enhance interoperability among access control and security products. It has been recognized as an international standard by the International Electrotechnical Commission for electronic protection systems.
OSDP facilitates advanced and secure communication between the reader and the access control panel that supports the protocol. This is crucial for protecting against attack threats, such as replay attacks. By offering secure and bi-directional communication between the reader and third-party controller platforms, the OSDP upgrade allows security professionals to simplify and secure vehicle access.
Advantages of OSDP
In various projects, OSDP has proven its value and reliability. Although the Wiegand protocol is still prevalent in security and access control systems, OSDP is gradually becoming the preferred choice. Here are some key advantages of using OSDP-enabled RFID readers and Physical Access Control Systems:
- Increased Security: OSDP provides enhanced security through its Secure Channel Protocol, which is essential for securely exchanging data credentials.
- Ease of Installation: OSDP simplifies installation by allowing the use of longer cables, reducing the number of wires needed. This leads to cost savings and a more efficient use of time and resources.
- Open Industry Standard: As an open industry standard, OSDP offers greater flexibility, allowing security professionals to choose devices from different manufacturers. End users can create a customized solution that is easy to upgrade by adding more devices.
- Bi-Directional Communication: OSDP enables communication between the reader and controller, allowing readers to be configured and managed remotely.

In essence, TagMaster's implementation of OSDP offers enhanced security, flexibility in communication setup, and ease of integration, making it a powerful solution for modern access control and secure communications in environments requiring reliable data exchange.
Technical details at a glance
Below follows a high-level technical explanation of how OSDP works and relates to TagMaster’s Long Range RFID Readers:
1. Enhanced Communication: TagMaster’s XT- and LR Series utilize OSDP to establish robust communication between Control Panels (CPs) and Peripheral Devices (PDs) like RFID readers. OSDP is designed for secure and reliable communication, often over RS485 or RS232 interfaces, which supports flexible configurations for data transmission settings such as baud rate, parity, and stop bits.
2. Security: TagMaster supports OSDP Secure Channel (encrypted communication), ensuring that data transferred between devices remains protected. The readers can set up secure sessions using a Secure Channel Base Key (SCBK), making it suitable for applications that require high-security standards, like access control.
3. Control Features:
- Command and Control: The readers support a range of OSDP commands, including polling, device identification, and status reporting, enabling the control and monitoring of connected devices.
- Output and Input Control: TagMaster's devices can manage multiple outputs such as relay controls and buzzer controls, making them highly configurable for specific user needs in access control scenarios.
- Reader LED and Buzzer Management: The ability to manage visual (LED) and auditory (buzzer) signals allows users to control on-device feedback based on system status or user actions.
4. Integration Flexibility: The TagMaster RFID Readers can be configured easily for OSDP via both hardware (using DIP switches) and software interfaces (web settings). This flexibility makes it easy for integrators to set up and customize the protocol behaviour, such as emulation modes, serial parameters, and secure communication settings.
5. Compatibility and Interoperability: TagMaster’s OSDP implementation allows for compatibility with third-party systems, especially in access control environments. By supporting multiple protocol settings and communication standards, the readers are interoperable with different controllers and systems using OSDP.
