Anti-Pass Back, Dual Wiegand Ports and External Antenna

TagMaster's XT-5 RFID Long-Range Reader continues to set the benchmark in modern access control, and we’re pleased to highlight two key capabilities that elevate performance and reduce system complexity: Dual Wiegand ports and support for an external antenna, enabling full anti-pass back functionality.

What is Anti-Pass Back and why it matters

Anti-Pass Back (APB) is a security protocol built into access control systems that requires a credential (card, tag or fob) to be used in a sequence of enter → exit → enter (and so on) for a controlled zone. If the credential tries to enter again without a proper exit, or exit again without a proper entry, the system detects a violation and acts accordingly.

Key Benefits of Anti-Pass Back

1. Prevention of credential misuse or sharing: When one person enters a zone and then hands their tag to someone else, APB prevents the second person from re-using that tag until the first person has registered exit. This prohibits unauthorised access through shared credentials.

2. Improved accountability and occupancy tracking: Because every enter and exit event is logged in sequence, operators know who is in or out of a controlled area at any given moment. This is critical in zones with high safety or security demands (e.g., car parks, industrial facilities, restricted facilities).

3. Streamlined compliance and audit readiness: APB supports regulatory and safety responsibilities by providing clear records of movement in and out of controlled areas. It strengthens the audit trail and helps prove that only authorised access occurred.

4. Enhanced surface for security integration: APB forms a foundation for advanced access scenarios: monitoring tail-gating, enforcing “badge out” policies, zoning control, timed re-entry restrictions and more.

Where should Anti-Pass Back be used?

- In installations such as parking facilities, secure access lanes, truck and transport entry/exit points, APB is especially valuable.

- At a parking gate: a tag must have an Entry-event then later an Exit-event before it can be used again. If someone tries to re-use the tag and let a second vehicle through, APB will block it.

- In a building or campus: APB ensures that tagholders and vehicles properly log their entry and exit, so that the system know who is still inside.

External Antenna for Extended Performance

The XT-5 comes with an integrated antenna and a dedicated connector for an external antenna. When paired with TagMaster’s high-performance external antenna, you gain maximum read reliability and greater flexibility in how you design your access lanes, all without additional cabling challenges.

Dual Wiegand Ports – Smarter Access Management

Unlike conventional readers with a single output, the XT-5 features two Wiegand ports, allowing clear separation of Entry and Exit data. This gives system administrators precise visibility into vehicle flow, improves operational control, and streamlines site management.

Anti-Pass Back Made Easy

With one Wiegand port assigned to Entry and the second to Exit, the XT-5 fully supports anti-pass back rules. This ensures that a single tag cannot be reused to enter or leave a site multiple times without proper sequence, strengthening security and preventing credential misuse.

When only one Wiegand port is used, the system cannot distinguish whether a read event is IN or OUT. With the XT-5’s dual-port design, combined with an external antenna, this limitation disappears, enabling dependable and secure anti-pass back operation

A More Efficient and Cost-Effective Installation

Choosing the XT-5 gives integrators and system owners several advantages:
